It can get confusing, when asking locals in Venda about the Tshatshingo Potholes, not least because their local soccer team is called the Tshatshingo Potholes, but also because not everyone knows where these potholes are, or that they exist. They are located 77 km away from the lodge.
Set right up against the northern border of South Africa, uniting Botswana and Zimbabwe, lies Mapungubwe National Park – an extensive savannah landscape situated at the meeting place of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. Kruger National Park, in northeastern South Africa,is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. Its high density of wild animals includes the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. The little town of Schoemansdal, 12 kilometres west of Makhado off the R522 en route to Vivo, began as one of the most important trading centres in the then Northern Transvaal in the time of largely renegade and shady dealings in ivory, horns, skins, salt and wood. One can visit this attraction by traveling for 22 km on the R522 Vivo Road.
The Louis Trichardt Golf Club takes its name after the town it has been built in and is widely known as one of the very best South African nine-hole golf courses. Situated on Anderson Street 3 km from the lodge the golf course is ideal for guests who want to swing a few strokes.
Regarded as the most majestic and beautiful forest in the Limpopo region, Thathe Vondo is also regarded as sacred by the local Venda people. Situated in the heart of Venda about 59 km from the lodge.
Phiphidi Falls is one of several natural sacred sites of the Venda people. The others include Lake Funduzi and the Thate Vonde Forest. The falls are used by the elders of the Ramunangi, a Venda clan, or communicating with their ancestors. It is a beautiful cascade of water surrounded by thick trees and lush vegetation. Situated 50 km away from our lodge.
Sagole is the name of the biggest baobab tree in the world. The tree has been carbon dated as 1 200 years of age. It stands 22 meters high, and has a 33 meter circumference, which correlates to 36 people holding hands around the tree or 57 people standing shoulder to shoulder. Situated 160 km away from the lodge, trips can be arranged to the attraction.
Situated 22,6 km from The Anza Lifestyle Lodge on the scenic N1 North towards Beitbridge Boarder gate. From Louis Trichardt the N1 heads due north to carve its way through the Soutpansberg, reaching the northern side of this stretch of mountains through a narrow gorge known as Wyllie’s Poort. Two tunnels, one after another, take one directly through the mountain, and views along its route make it a popular scenic drive.
Situated 28,2 km away from the lodge along the R524 Punda Maria road towards Thohoyandou. The biggest body of water in the area, Albasini Dam lies east of Louis Trichardt, just south of the Entabeni State Forest.
The enchanted body of water known as Lake Fundudzi is a sacred lake of the Venda people that lies in the heart of the Soutpansberg region and is one of the few true inland lake systems in South Africa. Situated 64,1 km away from the lodge in the Nzhelele Valley, this lake is worth visiting.
Lying west of the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park, Nwanedi Game Reserve is particularly scenic situated as it is in the foothills of the Venda Mountains in the foothills of the Soutpansberg. The nature reserve is situated 125 km away from The Anza Lifestyle Lodge.
Located 50 km away from the lodge at Ha-Mphaila Village in Nzhelele under Makhado Local Municipality, is a history of the breathing stone which dates back to the stone age, and believed to be the ancestral grounds of the northern people.
The Tshivhase tea estate was once the economic heartbeat in the Vhembe district. With more than 1700 hectares of tea plantations, less than 20 hectares are being maintained and rehabilitated without any harvesting taking place. One can still visit this plantation and enjoy some of the tourist attractions on offer. The estate is located 70 km away from the lodge.
It is situated between Thohoyandou and Malamulele with a catchment area of 1 380km², which stretches from Makhado in the west to Malamulele in the east. The overall length of the dam wall is 2,215 kilometers with a spillway of 200 meters in length to accommodate the regional maximum flood of 4,650 cubic meters per second. The height of the dam wall is 47 meters. The dam was initially known as the Mutoti Dam, but the name was changed to Nandoni Dam in 1995.
